Monument to the Heroes of Otranto

Highlight • Monument

We are in the monumental part of the seafront where stands the monument (inaugurated in the 1922) dedicated to the heroes and martyrs who died in 1480 under the Turkish fleets. High about 3.70 m, the statue depicts a woman wrapped in a large cloak with a headdress bearing the coat of arms of the city, while on her cloak there is the coat of arms of the Province of Lecce, finally a dolphin biting the Turkish crescent. The woman hugs the flag and the cross, symbols of patriotism and faith that the Otranto people would have defended with their blood. The concept that inspired the artist is the disdainful pride of the city of Otranto, depicted as a heroine who turns a proud and contemptuous gaze towards the sea from which the invading Turks came.

Otranto Heroes' Promenade

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Lungomare degli Eroi is a promenade on the sea of Otranto in the ancient village of the city, in an area forbidden to cars and pedestrianized. It offers a panoramic view of the port and the Aragonese castle and takes its name from the statue dedicated to the Martyrs of Otranto, 800 citizens killed by the Turks in 1480. There are numerous bars and restaurants to spend the evening, relax and admire the panorama, the ancient walls, and city gates.

Baia delle Orte

Highlight • Beach

Quiet location even in August. The small beach of the same name, in the north of the spacious bay, can be reached by climbing. Interesting snorkeling spot in summer.

Bauxite Lake, Otranto

Highlight • Lake

The discovery of the deposit and its exploitation date back to 1940. Following its abandonment 30 years later, the numerous water infiltrations due to the underground aquifers have allowed the formation of a small lake with a very particular color.
All this creates a suggestive environment immersed in the typical Mediterranean scrub with shades ranging from emerald green to intense red. Today the area, completely re-naturalized, hosts luxuriant pine forests and paths and is used for agricultural-pastoral activities as well as a destination for walking and outdoor activities.

Serpent Tower

Highlight • Monument

The name is linked to an ancient legend that tells of a snake that every night came up from the cliff to drink the oil that kept the lighthouse lantern lit. At one point the inhabitants of Otranto ambushed him, killing him and the snake's companion, knowing it, climbed the tower, wrapped herself around and hugged it until it destroyed it.
Another legend tells that a few years before the capture of Otranto in 1480 the Saracens had headed towards the Salento city to sack it, but even on that occasion the snake, having drunk the oil, had turned off the lighthouse. Pirates without reference points passed by and attacked nearby Brindisi.
