Hiking variant of the Middle Rhine via ferrata

Highlight • Climb

he Middle Rhine Klettersteig is (for a low mountain range) a surprisingly 'real' via ferrata, though frequently interspersedwith hiking trails, some of which are extensive. Yet it has a wide variety of challenging trails, certainly for beginners.

Length: 5,1 km
Difficulty level: Difficult
Walking time: about 2 to 3 hours
Season: All year except ice and snow

This section looks more difficult than it actually is.
One of the most beautiful sections of the via ferrata.

The steep ridge trail runs on the rock spur between the Rhine and Mühlbach. Ideal to descend back to Boppard from the Mittelrheinsteig and Vierseeblick.

View of the Boppard Rhine Bend

Highlight • Viewpoint

The 2000-year-old Boppard is located on the largest loop of the Rhine on the way through the Rhenish Slate Mountains to the north German plain. The river here changes direction twice, almost 180 degrees, in a double S-curve.

View of Boppard and the Rhine

Highlight • Viewpoint

Boppard is located on the upper Middle Rhine, the so-called Middle Rhine Valley. This characteristic, narrow valley shape was created by deep erosion of the Rhine. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The Rhine forms the eastern border of the city over a distance of seventeen kilometres. The local districts of Hirzenach, Bad Salzig and Boppard lie on it.

The Rhine makes its largest loop directly north of Boppard. This bears the name Bopparder Hamm. However, this term is usually used to describe the wine-growing region located there.

View of the Boppard Rhine Bend

Highlight • Viewpoint

From various vantage points above Boppard there is a view of the city and the Middle Rhine Valley, one of the best known being the Cäcilienhöhe on the L210, which can also be reached by car. The Boppard chairlift leads to the immediate vicinity of two well-known viewpoints over the Bopparder Hamm Rhine loop, the Gedeonseck and the Vierseenblick. The latter gets its name from the fact that, from this point, the Rhine Valley looks like it consists of four lakes. In fact, this view is created by the fact that the Rhine, which flows in a loop, is obscured by the surrounding landscape at certain points. From the nearby Gedeonseck, on the other hand, you have a view over the entire Rhine loop and also towards the city. Both viewpoints have gastronomic offers. In 2006, the Mittelrhein via ferrata was opened in the Gedeonseck/Vierseenblick area. Eleven climbing passages are overcome in a circuit.
