Shoreham Toll Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Shoreham Toll Bridge is the last example of this kind of bridge and has a surprisingly-rich history. In a stunning position over the River Adur, the bridge offers great views and is close to the 10th-century St Nicolas’ Church. The bridge was initially built in 1781. Prior to that people and animals were pulled from one side of the estuary to the other on a flat raft, a perilous journey at times, or had to walk 10 miles to the bridge at Branbur. Shoreham Old Toll Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

The easiest to access and safest way to cross the Adur in the area - the alternatives are busy roads. This crossing links with the Downs Link on the east side of the river and other Downs access points, including Steyning Bostal, to the west.

March 6, 2025,Shoreham Adur River Short Loop (3km)
Pram friendly, a few slightly muddy patches so best to avoid this route after heavy rain if taking a pram. You start at the Adur recreation grounds (free parking) and then walk along the Adur river bank up to the pedestrian bridge before looping back. Lovely views of the river, the air field, Lancing College. There's a little coffee shack …
