Växjö Cathedral

The legend of Saint Sigfrid - A legend that was first written down in the 13th century says that the missionary Sigfrid traveled from England to what is now Sweden around the year 1000 to convert the people there to Christianity. He thought that the fertile land by the lake around what is now Växjö was the right place to build a church. When he answered the call to the court of King Olof Skötunge one day, he left his three nephews, who were monks, to guard the church. The locals took advantage of his absence to kill the three nephews. They buried their heads in the lake and the church was burned down. When Sigfrid returned, the three nephews revealed themselves as figures of light and asked him to build a new church on the same spot by the lake. According to legend, the locals soon regretted their actions and then actively helped build the new church - the origin of today's cathedral. Växjö Cathedral has its roots in the early Middle Ages and has burned down more than once. Today, the church with its distinctive twin towers is a landmark of the city. Thanks to its proximity to the Kingdom of Crystal, many of the church's sacred works of art are made of glass, which makes the church and its decorations unique.

Lake Växjö

Highlight • Lake

The average altitude is 171 meters above sea level and the area is 8.59 square kilometers. When including the 2 upstream catchment areas, the cumulative area is 20.47 square kilometers. The Bergunda canal, which drains the catchment area, has a tributary order of 2, meaning the water flows through a total of 2 watercourses before reaching the sea after 114 kilometers. The catchment area has 0.76 square kilometers of water surface, corresponding to 8.8% of sea level. The buildings in the area cover an area of 7.34 square kilometers or 85% of the catchment area.

The lake is a very bird-rich lake with many ducks and Canada geese.

Växjösjön was previously heavily polluted and eutrophied. An official report from 1901 states: "Växjösjön can serve no other purpose than as a large reservoir for the city's wastewater". Nowadays, most of the wastewater is treated in sewage treatment plants. Nevertheless, eutrophication remains an environmental problem that the municipality is working on.
