Zugmantel-Bandholz Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The dunes between Walldorf and Sandhausen are part of the inland dunes, a special feature of the northern Upper Rhine plain.

The dune range south of Sandhausen was released for sand mining in the 1970s; mining was not stopped until 1980. The Zugmantel-Bandholz area essentially comprises the site of the former sand pit.

In 1985 the sand pit with its water areas was placed under nature protection. (Https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zugmantel-Bandholz)

In the Gewann Zugmantel-Bandholz sand was mined for a long time. 1980 ended the operation. After filling the pit with excavated soil and rubble, the area was reforested in the southwest with Scots pine and oak. The sandy areas in the pit center, however, remained largely open without overlap. In a few years, the originally existing fauna and flora appeared on the not used sandflures. This called the conservation on the plan. The once extensive dune areas of the Northern Oberheinebene had declined at that time, with the exception of a few remaining areas. The unique, landscape typical monuments threatened to disappear altogether. Thus, already in 1986, the under protection position of the former sand pit Zugmantel-Bandholz, almost at the same time with the protected area designation of the horse drive dune Sandhausen.

Since 2005, the NSG Zugmantel-Bandholz belongs to the FFH area "Sand Areas between Mannheim and Sandhausen".

The face is very beautifully designed. The tree trunk is very easy to miss. Well done!

Bandholz shelter

Highlight • Mountain Hut

It is an inconspicuous shelter. But it's always good to know where one is.

Lutheran Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Beautiful wooden bridge over the Hardtbach. At midnight, a crying, veiled figure is said to be wandering about without a head. In the dialect thriller "Die Luddarisch Brick" by Arnim Töpel, named after the bridge, the bridge plays a central role.

Maulbeerbuckel Sand Dune

Highlight • Natural Monument

A handrail to guide visitors protects the open sandy areas on the mulberry hump. For example, sand bees can create their nests in the ground undisturbed. Three large information boards explain how NABU, the City of Walldorf and the District Forestry Office have worked closely together in the project framework on the Maulbeerbuckel to create a "light island" as a habitat for animal and plant species that need light and warmth.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

View of the Brühlwegdüne - here the partly diseased forest was cleared in 2021 so that the dune vegetation can spread further.
