She is said to have come to a pagan sacrificial site here in the fourth century. Because she refused to pay homage to the deities and was executed, a trial by ordeal was demanded. A linden tree was planted upside down in the ground. If the plant withered, this would be proof that the pagan deities were stronger; if it survived, this would show that the Christian religion was superior. The roots began to sprout."
