Mariëndaal is located on the southern slope of the Veluwe moraine northwest of Arnhem. The landscape has large differences in height and includes a green bocage landscape. The Klingelbeek or Slijpbeek rises in the area. This stream flows in a southerly direction. It flows into the Lower Rhine via the Rosandepolder. The valley of the Slijpbeek has been cut out of the moraine by erosion.

In the higher part of the valley, Wijnand van Arnhem made land available on which the Augustinian monastery Domus Fontis Beatae Mariae was founded in 1392. In Dutch this monastery was first called Mariënborn and later Mariëndaal.
