Braunsberg

Highlight • Summit

The Braunsberg, together with the Thebener Kogel in Slovakia, represents the Hainburg or Hungarian gate of the Danube. The breakthrough valley at the Braunsberg is a geological link between the Alps and the Carpathians. The Braunsberg is also an archaeologically significant site. The Celts built a powerful settlement on the plateau, protected by a palisade fence (2nd century BC). A small part of the palisade and a watchtower have been reconstructed.

Unexpected encounter with this building, an Evangelical Church actually, most appreciated if you walk along the narrow street that comes down from the castle towards the river.

Theodorapalast Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Theodora Palace Hainburg
The long side of a hall building with a pair of coupled windows can still be seen on the city side of this area. The cloverleaf arched end of the double window (similar to the residential tower of the castle) suggests it was built in the time of Leopold VI. close. The traditional name "Theodora" would also be justified here, since she (wife of Duke Leopold VI.) stayed in Hainburg around 1225. In 1226 she is said to have been expelled from the city by Henry the Cruel (the duke's second-born son), who had taken Hainburg. This scene is also shown in the Babenberger Stammbau. Queen Dowager Margarethe, who was assigned Hainburg as his residence after the death of the last Babenberger, may have lived in this palace.

Schlossberg castle ruins – the Heimenburg
The still imposing remains of the medieval Heimenburg am Schlossberg, built in 1050, are a popular destination. From the top you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of Hainburg, the Donau-Auen National Park and Bratislava. The castle complex consists of the castle gate, the castle courtyard, the Pankratius chapel, the palace and the residential tower. The wedding of Ottokar of Bohemia and Margaret of Austria took place in the castle chapel in 1252. Three footpaths lead to the facility, which is located in the middle of the city. From the parking lot at the Hummelstraße sports field, the steep cart path but also the comfortable hiking trail and the serpentine path from the Ungartor via the parade ground lead up to the castle.
