Saint-Jean-de-Losne Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is originally a town located in an area surrounded by water. The bridge is therefore an essential element to allow access to the city. Originally, this bridge was made of wood and was located opposite the old Seurre road, downstream of the current bridge. It remained in place until the beginning of the 19th century, but these wooden constructions were not strong enough to withstand the floods of the Saône and the ice.
In 1838, a stone bridge was built on the site of the current bridge. It was destroyed during the wars of 1870, 1914-1918 and during an explosion in 1940.
The current bridge dates from the 1950s and is made of reinforced concrete.

St. Jean

Highlight • Other

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Saint-Jean-de-Losne is a 15th century church in Gothic and Renaissance style covered with glazed tiles.

An ex-voto boat dedicated to Saint Nicolas (patron saint of boatmen) suspended in the transept since 1826 recalls the river tradition of Saint-Jean-de Losne.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Jean-de-Losne lies at the junction of three major waterways: the Saône River, which flows towards the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea; the Burgundy Canal, which flows towards the Seine and the Paris Basin; and the Rhine-Rhône Canal, which flows towards the Rhine and Northern and Eastern Europe.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the smallest municipalities in France: a total of 0.60 km², of which 0.36 km² is land and the rest water.

Quai de la Hutte, Losne

Highlight • Other

At this wide part of the navigable river the canal boats can dock on the south side, with beautiful views to the town of St Jean and the entrance to its harbor. A few hundred meters further the tow path has an unpaved section, so the official EV6 bike trail here turns south to follow the road to Chagney for 2 km, where it reunites again with the towpath.

Highlight • River

Lovely paved trail along the river. Part of the EuroVelo 6 from the Atlantic to the Black Sea, and also continues along the river all the way down to the Mediterranean

This is where the Rhine-Rhone canal flows into the Saône river. Technically, the canal continues through the river, which is also deepened in the upper reaches and straightened in some places with canal passages.

This spot marks the canal's mouth at the Saône River. The Rhine-Rhône Canal had a turbulent history, with construction interrupted by the French Revolution and finally extending from 1784 to 1832.

The lock at the canal's mouth has been renovated. In 2009, a lock keeper's cabin was installed, perched six meters high, to control the arrival of boats.
