Hill 60, south of Ypres, was of immense strategic importance during the war. Whoever occupied the 60-meter-high hill observed the battlefield. Fierce fighting took place around Hill 60, even underground. Both sides undermined each other's positions there. On April 26, 1916, the Germans detonated a mine under Trench 42. The trench, which ran across Wervik Street, was then manned by a platoon of the Canadian 2nd Battalion (Eastern Ontario). The explosion created a crater 25 meters wide and 10 meters deep. It was a fiery task to extract the wounded, let alone the dead, from the rubble. At least four unfortunates were buried alive: Thomas Riddols, a 21-year-old student from Drayton, Ontario; Bruce Brooks, originally from London; Edward Archer; and Arthur Harris.

Vermeulen Mill (Elverdinge)

Highlight • Monument

Vermeulen's mill was built in 1843, replacing a wooden windmill. The building is owned by the Vermeulen/Smagghe family. It is a flour mill, with a very high hull.

The blades were removed in 1909 and the mill was mechanically driven. During the Second World War, the mill hull was used as an observation post by German soldiers. They built a few more layers of bricks on top to have an even better overview of the region.

The mill body and mechanical mill were restored in 1993-1994. The mechanical mill was preserved and is located on the ground floor and in the first three attics. There are still three pairs of stones, a bump, an oat crusher and a diesel engine type L 25 HP.

The mill was protected together with the surrounding area in 1975. In 1980 the interior was also protected.

The mill has a height of 29 meters, making it the highest in West Flanders.

The mill can still be visited.

Charles Vermeulen's mill stood next to the newly constructed castle park of Count d'Ennetières. He wanted to buy the mill and surrounding land. Both owners could not reach an agreement. D'Ennetières planted dozens of poplars on his land, close to the mill. Once they were of sufficient size, the mill blades could no longer catch the wind and so the miller was forced to build his mill higher.

Between July 31 and November 10 1917, the area between Ypres and Passchendaele saw the most bloody battle of the First World War in Flanders, with more than 450,000 casualties.
‘The Long Road to Passchendaele’ monument was unveiled on August 19 2017 marking the centenary of the battle. It is a sculpture of ten silhouetted soldiers marching towards Passendale. The group measures 48 meters long, three meters high and is made of seven tons of Corten steel.
The silhouettes represent troops of all nations and an adjacent signpost shows how far the soldiers were fighting from home.

This incline has a steep start and requires attention in the turn at the spur due to a hedge somewhat blocking the view.
Thanks to the descending run-up, you quickly get over the steep start.
It is fun to climb through the trees.
