Church of San Pietro in Silki

Where a village named Silki once stood, now the church of San Pietro overlooks the square of the same name, together with the Franciscan Convent and the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie.
The building, originally from the 11th century, has undergone various remodeling over time, alternating the Romanesque style with the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The façade is from the 17th century with a portal (originally there were three) and a lunette tympanum. The single-nave interior opens into numerous chapels (the first, dedicated to the Virgin, is the most important). At the bottom stands the gilded high altar of exquisite workmanship containing the polychrome ceramic simulacrum of the Madonna delle Grazie with Child.
Adjacent to the square and the church, there are the "Orti di San Pietro", a large green space enclosed by an ancient wall and whose dry terraces include vegetable gardens, vineyards, a citrus grove and a vast olive grove, in addition to some centuries-old trees.

The building was built in the period between 1775 and 1805 - by Lombard workers directed by the Piedmontese architect Carlo Valino - at the behest of Don Antonio Manca Amat, nephew of Diego to whom he owed the title of Marquis of Mores and who in 1775 had fief of the island of Asinara and the title of duke. From a social point of view, the construction of the new Doge's Palace expressed the need to strengthen the predominant role of the family towards the new emerging classes and in particular the "colony" of Genoese merchants who controlled the trade in food and livestock and which therefore it represented a fundamental and fearful element of the Sassari economy.

In 1800 the square was the favorite spot for elegant walks and on holidays the music band played there. It became therefore the soul and the heart of the city. When Sassari then expanded, the ideal city center moved from Piazza Castello to the new great Piazza d’Italia.
In the 1950s, the demolition of some low buildings and the construction of two skyscrapers further modified the square. More recently, the numerous palm trees that shaded the square have been eliminated, because they were hit by the red weevil, a dangerous parasite that attacks especially this type of trees.
Under the square runs an archaeological path between the walkways and some underground rooms that had belonged to the Castle. The entrance is from a low glass block structure. The visit is really worth it.
