Historic Deep Drilling World Record Monument (1872–1878)

The 35 m deep Liether Kalkgrube is of national importance as a geological natural monument. It is the only national geotope on the Schleswig-Holstein mainland. The lime pit shows a section of the inside of a salt dome that stretches from Elmshorn to Tornesch. However, apart from the remains of gypsum rock, the salt is dissolved away from the groundwater down to a depth of approx. 150 m. The limestone, sandstone and claystone of the Liether Kalkgrube belong to the Permian. They were dragged up from a depth of 6 to 7 km by the buoyancy of underlying Lower Permian (Rotliegend) salt together with overlying Upper Permian (Zechstein) salt. Like the original salt deposits, the bright red coloring of Rotliegend mudstone is a result of the hot, dry climate around 260 million years ago. The Ice Age climate is documented in the lime pit by deposits from the early Ice Age and by a boulder garden. The lime pit and boulders enable a look back at events from 1.9 billion years of geological history. In the immediate vicinity, a deep drilling world record at the time was achieved in 1878 with a final depth of 1338 m. The drilling site is on a circular route.
