Highlight • Historical Site

The Mathildenhof has been history since 2015. A high-voltage pylon along the way still gives clues to this former place.

Due to the inner-German division, a very important shipping connection was lost for the Federal Republic of Germany, because the Magdeburg waterway junction was in the GDR. As a result, the Elbe (and the North Sea) could no longer be reached from the Mittelland Canal. To create an alternative for this, a new canal was built between 1968 and 1976.

West of Wolfsburg near Edesbüttel, the Elbe Lateral Canal branches off from the Mittelland Canal and runs close to Uelzen and Lüneburg to Artlenburg, where it flows into the Elbe.

Since Lüneburg was only about 25 km from the former inner-German border, the eastern canal embankment was created as a barrier for tank troops. On the western side, the bridges and underpasses were equipped with explosive shafts.

The channel is 115.2 kilometers long, has an average depth of 4.0-4.5 meters and a width of 55-70 meters. The height difference of approx. 61 meters is overcome by the Uelzen lock (23 metres) and the Scharnebeck ship lift (38 metres). The canal's water supply comes exclusively from the Elbe by means of pumping stations at the canal stages. About 80% of the canal is secured with 22 cm thick asphalt concrete to prevent water from escaping.

The demands of the environmentalist Dr. Ekkehard Wipper zum Grossen Moor have established themselves as
proven right for the future. A rethink takes place after 37 years.

"More remain moist and thus protect the climate. The waterlogging project by NLWKN and state forests in the Gifhorn district is intended to reduce CO2 emissions."

It took 37 years for the statement Dr. Wippers about the value of the moor is heard. Everything he mentioned back then is now being rediscovered and fortunately appreciated: the moor as an important water reservoir, the years of drought that have now arrived, the biological diversity on the damp meadows, the large CO2 storage. Only the leading animal species, the black grouse, could not wait until politicians and authorities finally managed the overdue rethinking. It's extinct.

Großes Moor near Gifhorn

Highlight • Natural

The Great Moor in Sassenburg is part of the north-west German raised bog district, which extends from the Netherlands to the eastern border of Lower Saxony on the geest areas shaped by the Ice Age. The moor originally covered an area of approx. 5,800 ha with almost 5,000 hectares of raised moor and a smaller proportion of fen. The peat layer reaches a thickness of almost 6 meters in places. Individual sub-areas have their own names, such as Stüder-Moor, Hestenmoor or Weißes Moor.

Most of the moor is in the municipality of Sassenburg (Gifhorn district). In the east it is bordered by the Elbe side canal. In the south lies the district of Triangel, in the west the moor stretches as far as Wesendorf. In the north is the municipality of Schönewörde. Originally founded as a moor colony, today's Sassenburg district of Neudorf-Platendorf, whose village street is around six kilometers long and the longest through town in Lower Saxony, extends from the south into the moor.

The Great Moor fills the valley of the Ise over a length of 15 km and a width between 2 and 6 km. About 49 km² of the original 58 km² of the moor are still preserved today. Due to peat cutting and cultivation, they are in varying degrees of degeneration.
