When the Elbe-Side Canal was built between 1968 and 1976, a so-called saving lock was built near the village of Esterholz to overcome a height difference of 23 meters. This was supplemented by a second lock. After eight years of construction, the new Uelzen II lock was opened on December 8, 2006.

The federal government invested 122 million euros in the new lock. The centerpiece is the new lock chamber with a useful length of 190 meters and a width of 12.50 meters. It was built as a so-called saving lock with a total of eight saving basins, which are arranged one above the other on four levels on both sides of the lock chamber.
