Rincón de la Vieja National Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Rincón de la Vieja National Park is located just a few kilometers north of the city of Liberia. The starting point for an exploration is the Las Pailas ranger station, which is reached via a mostly well-developed road and has a large car park.
The 14000 ha national park is between 600 and 1900 m altitude. In addition to over 250 bird species, there are also sloths, monkeys, skunks, squirrels and much more to discover here. Also worth a detour are the steaming and sulphur-scented fumaroles, boiling mud pools and crater lakes.
There, where the lush vegetation thins out, you always have a beautiful view of the still active volcano Rincón de la Vieja.
The park is open every day except Monday from 8am-4pm (as of March 2022) and it is not difficult to enjoy a full day here.

Hot Springs

Highlight • Natural Monument

Hot sulphurous springs mingle with the river, but the springs are edged so you can sit on the edge and keep your feet in the hot water. The smell of sulfur is very distinctive, apart from the place is fantastically beautiful and invites you to linger (from which the smell unfortunately holds).

Volcancito Fumarole

Highlight • Volcano

In the Las Pailas sector of the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, steam is rising from the ground all the time. The activity of the Rincó de la Vieja volcano can be seen and smelled everywhere

Seasonal waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

Fumorole... It stinks and fizzes badly. Smell of sulfur... Due to the strong wind, it's quite unpleasant... But bearable.

In the forest near the mud pots and fumaroles there are some giant trees that make you wonder how old they are. Huge plank and aerial roots create a thicket.

Very nice tour through the deepest jungle. Some of the paths are difficult to walk and seem to be rarely used. On the tour we not only saw the various volcanic activities but also tapirs, monkeys and lots of birds. Also a toucan. Very worthwhile.

In CR, the kilometers walked are always incorrect on Komoot. This is an indication if someone needs to divide their strength. Seems to be due to the approximately 20-30 meter high canopy 🙃?!🤷🏼‍♀️

We walked this walk in April 2025. It seems that at 9.78 km there are 2 rivers instead of 1. You first pass a small river, according to the location on the map the drawn river and then pass a larger river. For us this was quite confusing. Also, when we got home we were covered in small ticks (>40 …

A fantastically beautiful tour through the jungle. Unfortunately, there were a lot of small ticks along the way. 😝 Saw lots of capuchin monkeys, butterflies, and monster toads.
