Upper Gate (Obere Tor), Saalfeld

Highlight • Monument

The Upper Gate, also called the Upper Köditz Gate, was built at the beginning of the 15th century. To the south of it lay the village of Nähernköditz in the area of today's "Köditz Desert". The late medieval, slender tower of the main gate had 4 floors and a hipped roof. It looked similar to the Lower and Blankenburg Gates. In front of the Upper Gate there was a foregate, which was separated from it by a moat and connected by a bridge with battlements and loopholes.
In 1517 the Upper Gate was badly damaged by the town fire, but was rebuilt. After the second major town fire in 1727, however, reconstruction took over 10 years. Only 2 floors were rebuilt, and a baroque onion dome with an octagonal tower helmet was added.

Saalfeld Town Hall and Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

The market square. Its shape, size and rectangular layout go back to Emperor Barbarossa.

The picturesque market square has been the centre of Saalfeld since the town on the Saale was founded. The enormous size, shape and rectangular layout of the market square as well as the width of the street in the centre go back to Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. He had Saalfeld planned as an imperial city around 1180. Important trade routes crossed here. The typical weekly markets are still held today.

Unfortunately, due to two devastating city fires, only a few medieval buildings on the market square remained. The market fountain in front of the town hall was ceremoniously inaugurated on April 17, 1999, in the year of the 1,100th anniversary of the first mention of Saalfeld. It takes the place of an earlier large market fountain that was demolished at the end of the 19th century.

Saalfeld

Highlight • Settlement

The Saalfeld town hall is an early Renaissance building on the market square in Saalfeld in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia. It is the seat of the Saalfeld city administration and is one of the most important historic town halls in Thuringia. In the courtyard stands the so-called hat box, a round tower with the Saalfeld official prison. In 1363, a town hall in Saalfeld was first documented in writing; in 1491, a so-called Lower Town Hall in Saalgasse was mentioned, which was destroyed by fire in 1517. The stately, three-story corner house was built between 1529 and 1537 and, along with the town halls in Neustadt an der Orla and Pößneck, is one of the most important new town halls of the Renaissance in Thuringia.

Bell tower in Bergfried Park

Highlight • Monument

Knut Schieferdecker regularly plays here on the oldest carillon in Germany in the Saalfeld Bergfried Park.
The bells were cast in the Ulrich AG bell foundry in Apolda in 1924 and are made to ring by hand using a carillon table and the associated action. Always beautiful! Even as a child I loved the sound of bells 🥰
