Shelter at Tütberg

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The hut is ideal for a short break – especially on longer circular tours through the eastern part of the Königsforst.

View from Tütberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

The view from the Tütberg, which at 212 meters is the highest elevation in the Königsforst forest, offers a beautiful panoramic view over the Bergisches Land region on a clear day. The view towards Bensberg Castle and the surrounding hills is particularly impressive.

The Tütberg is with 212 m the highest elevation in the king forest. It is located on the southeastern edge of Bockenberg near Untereschbach. About 500 meters from Tütberg is the Villa Tütberg, a remnant of a former settlement area called Tütberg. This settlement name originally referred to a medieval court foundation. In the original register of 1827 the settlement "Am Tütberg" is counted to the municipality "Eschbach". In 1975 Tütberg counted two residential buildings with 11 inhabitants.

I must admit that we didn't really notice it in the dark or at dusk 🌙🌆 – but ultimately the view of the sunset was simply amazing 🌅✨

A true idyll! Yet, this area was a DUMP for toxic sewage sludge until 50 years ago. The 50 m high dam was built over the long-closed Grünewald mine. Behind it, huge amounts of sewage sludge from the LÜDERICH lead and zinc mine, which lay on the other side of the Sülz valley, were finally disposed of. The sludge was pumped into the basin via an 800 m long pipeline across the Sülz valley. The pumping station in the valley can still be seen today.

Only after the closure of the Lüderich mine in 1978 did the sludge dump fall silent. It was specifically planted with grasses and reeds and allowed to silt up in places. Now it is used by birds as a resting and nesting place, including grey herons. However, only a long-term study can reveal how much heavy metal the birds store in their bodies.

Access to the interior is blocked by barriers and signs. A fine of €25-400 could be imposed if you still use the clearly visible footpaths to the photo points.

November 24, 2024,Untereschbach: Runde am Tütberg
Today I was in the Königsforst. I found surprisingly good, wide paths.
It is actually also accessible in a wheelchair (I saw one coming towards me).
Not too steep climbs or descents.

The highlight was the view from the Tütberg to the Siebengebirge and across the Cologne Bay to the Eifel.
😍 Simply wonderful! 😍
