Schwedenschanze

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

S4 coming from the memorial on the Langen Berg towards Jesuborn past the dog grave.
Take care, overgrown with roots and gravel.
Addendum:
The route is of course only S2. By high rating I mean the steep part of the hut.

The monument was built between 1911 and 1912 on the initiative of the Thuringian Forest Association Gehren. The basic idea was to honor the deceased sovereign Karl Günther von Schwarzburg - Sondershausen, who often stayed with his wife Marie in Gehren Castle, which belonged to the sovereign.

Right next to the poacher's house is a narrow trail towards Möhrenbach. Very steep and blocky.

Gehren Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The first buildings were probably built here in the 12th century on a trade route from Erfurt to Nuremberg. In 1308 the lords of Berlstedt erected further buildings here, which in 1464 became the property of the Counts of Schwarzburg. During this time they built the south wing.
From 1574 the palace was expanded in the Renaissance style and the north and south wings were combined into one building. To this end, sandstone blocks from the abandoned Paulinzella Monastery were used. The palace chapel was built in 1666. Subsequently, the palace served as a hunting and summer residence for the counts and princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, and Prince Günther I even used it as a residence between 1720 and 1740. In 1918 it passed into the possession of the state of Thuringia and was mainly used as a house.
In a fire on September 11, 1933, the castle was destroyed and largely demolished in the following years, leaving only the remains of some surrounding walls. Between 1997 and 2001 the ruin was secured, partially restored and made accessible. It is surrounded by the extensive castle park in the style of an English garden.
