The Fox & Hounds Pub, Ennerdale Bridge

Highlight • Pub

A classic country pub with two roaring log fires, a beer garden, fine ales and traditional pub grub. If you've taken your hound for a jaunt in the surrounding fells, you're in luck: the owners actively encourage you to bring your dog. If staying overnight in Ennerdale, the pub has three spacious en-suite rooms.

Can be a bit of a rat run at certain times of the day as Sellafield workers finish their shifts and try and avoid the horrors of the A595.

Wast Water

Highlight • Viewpoint

It is from the western and southern banks of Wast Water that a view, often cited as England's favourite, will enchant anyone who visits. Framed perfectly by the lake below, Yewbarrow on the left and Lingmell on the right, is the striking squat pyramid of Great Gable. It is this view, above all others in the national park, that the Lake District chose as their logo.

Wast Water is England's deepest lake and forms the centrepiece of, arguably, its most spectacular valley. Around this spot are numerous places for a picnic or for a dip in the lake. The view of the Wast Water Screes to the east is not bad either! The prow-like rise of nearby Yewbarrow makes for an enticing ascent.

Seascale Beach

Highlight • Beach

Seascale beach is a pretty stretch of shoreline with views over the Irish Sea. On clear days, you may even see the distant hills of Galloway.

The beach was popular with holiday makers during the Victorian era as the Furness Railway brought city folk to the beach to enjoy the fresh air. Today, the beach is popular with anglers and kite surfers.
