Bleaklow Head

Highlight • Natural Monument

This rugged moorland plateau affords a real sense of solitude and breathtaking panoramic views. Bleaklow Head, standing at 2,077 feet (633 m) high, is one of three summits on this plateau and is marked by a huge cairn. You experience excellent views over the peat bog and gritstone landscape here.

Exposed rock formations.

This is a great place with the quirky stones, rock mounted trig point and nearby aircraft site. Good views to be had and also a UK designated Nuttall along with Bleaklow Head and Kinder Scout.

Here lies the wreckage of B-29 Superfortress Overexposed of the 16th photographic reconnaissance squadron usaf. which tragically crashed whilst decending through cloud on 3rd November 1948 killing all 13 crewmembers. The aircraft was on a routine flight from RAF Scampton to American AFB Burtonwood. It is doubtful the crew ever saw the ground.

B-29 Crash Site (Bleaklow)

Highlight • Structure

Quite boggy in some bits up to the peak, was relatively fine due to the ground being icy but take care.

Nice big rocks, nearly nicked them as they would look great in my rockery!
