The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop

The Bakewell Pudding – not to be confused with the Bakewell Tart, with a cherry on top – consists of a flaky pastry base with a layer of sieved jam and topped with a filling made of egg and almond paste. While the origins of the pudding are not clear, it’s believed to have been made by accident in 1860 by a lady called Mrs Greaves, who was the landlady of the White Horse Inn. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop lays claim to the 'original' pudding, which it has created using a secret recipe since 1889.

Having lived in Bakewell for many years, I can honestly say these are not the best puddings or tarts - This shop is also a bit of a lie as the original Bakewell pudding was made by accident at the Rutland hotel on the roundabout.

All Saints Church, Bakewell

All Saints church is hailed as one of the finest medieval parish churches in England. While parts date to the Saxon period, the Grade I-listed church was built in the 12th century, with modifications over the following 300 years. Inside, you can view a 14th-century font, a late 13th-century chancel and many monuments from history. Well worth a visit if you are in Bakewell.

Youlgreave village

Charming village although very narrow for traffic. Parking wise there is a cat park just on the edge of the village which is well signed. It’s got an honesty box but suggests £3 per day which is reasonable. There are good, clean toilet facilities there too. Start from the YHA in the village and turn left down the hill and it takes you to the Bradford River which has a designated swimming area.
