Herten Castle

Highlight • Castle

Herten Castle is a moated castle on the western edge of downtown Herten. It is located in the midst of an old English landscape garden and was first documented in 1376. Since 1962, the main building of the palace complex is a listed building. The present buildings were built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Herten Castle Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1908, the chapel was dismantled at the expense of the Counts of Nesselrode-Reichenstein and transported to Herten. It was carefully rebuilt in the castle forecourt using bricks from the Grimberg brickworks, which was located east of the Bleckkirche church.

Orangery in Herten Castle Park

Highlight • Historical Site

"The orangery originates from the baroque construction and design phase of the palace complex. Count Bertram von Nesselrode-Reichenstein had it built opposite the palace in 1725 according to the French model. Back then, orangeries in parks served as greenhouses for the wintering of exotic plants - especially for orange trees. But lavish parties and casino evenings were also celebrated here.
The roughly 170-meter gap between the castle and the orangery was adorned by a parterre richly decorated with plants and flowers - instead of today's daffodil meadow.
With a length of 35 meters, a width of 10 meters and a height of 8.50 meters, it is one of the largest orangeries in the region, adorned by a roof balustrade made of Baumberger sandstone with 12 almost life-size figures from Greek mythology. These figures were made by the famous Münster sculptor Johann Mauritz Gröninger - originally for the exhibition in the baroque garden.
The figures were saved and examined in the mid-1970s. It turned out that these were casts and no longer the original figures. They were packed in boxes by the LWL, brought to the European Monastery Museum Dalheim and stored there. "

Tabakhaus in Herten Castle Park

Highlight • Monument

"Behind the town hall - right on the edge of the palace park - is the small square tobacco house. After many years of restoring the line of sight to Hercules Square, it has been put in the right light again after many years. The small building has been upgraded in accordance with its particular importance through restoration and exemption. Now the building is free again, in the sense of the original baroque design concept.

By the way, the tobacco house got its "nickname" a long time ago: Fled from the French Revolution, the two Counts Riaucourt found shelter with their German relatives in Herten. Smoking was “en vogue” in France at the time, but - unfortunate for the refugees - frowned upon in Germany. Since they were not allowed to indulge in their truck in the castle, they retired to the small garden pavilion. Here they sat smoking in front of the fireplace and gave the tobacco house its name.
