Whitland Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

If you're interested in settlements with long histories, Whitland has plenty of intrigue to offer. Originally a Cistercian abbey was here, which survived until Henry VIII's Dissolution and the ruins can still be seen to the north east of the town.

In 930 AD, it's thought that the first ever Welsh assembly was held here, featuring a group of lawyers and church officials.

St. Mary's Church, Whitland

Highlight • Religious Site

Built in the mid-1800s, St. Mary's church lies just back from the road between Whitland and Trevaughan. It was originally on the main road but when the road was diverted, the church gained a new quietness and now finds itself on a dead end lane.

You can visit the exterior whenever you like and the church still operates services on Sundays.

St Peter's Church, Lampeter Velfrey

Highlight • Religious Site

This Grade II-listed church lies in the little village of Lampeter Velfrey. It sits on slightly raised ground, leading historians to speculate as to whether there might be an Iron or Bronze Age site underneath. Like most churches of medieval origin, it's undergone plenty of renovations in its time and there's plenty to see from different centuries.

Tavernspite Village Water Pump

Highlight • Monument

Like many settlements across the UK, Tavernspite's early iterations either revolved around religious sites or inns. Initially, there was a hospice here for monks travelling to Whitland Abbey; subsequently, there were various inns here for those passing through the area, particularly those travelling between Ireland and London.

Today, you can find hints of the settlement's history, such as the village water pumps.
