Ringweg Meiningen

Highlight • Trail

From the south of the city, the Ringweg leads up to Kreuzberg and the hut of the same name at an altitude of 390 meters.
Here, the first ascent is rewarded with a great view of Meiningen, before continuing towards Dreianzigacker.
After you have passed the place, the path leads past wide fields back towards Meiningen.
After a few kilometers you will reach the Diezhäuschen, a popular vantage point above the castle.
Past the Schaubachhütte it goes along allotments over the donkey bridge back into the city.
After a walk through the district of Helba, the ascent leads up to the Drachenberg and reaches the Friedenseichen viewpoint.
Here a memorial stone commemorates the arrival of the Russian tsar in Meiningen in 1813.
It continues on wide paths in the east of Meiningen.
Here you have another chance to take a look over the city before heading back.
After crossing the Werra you will reach the starting point of the tour again.

View of Meiningen

Highlight • Viewpoint

Meiningen is a district and cultural city in the Franconian south of Thuringia.
Meiningen has the function of a center and is the largest city in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen.
It is the cultural and judicial center of South Thuringia and an important economic center of the region.
The fulfilling municipality of Meiningen has 27,844 inhabitants.
Meiningen is located on the Werra, has extensive parks and numerous classicist buildings in the city center.
The historic old town, still surrounded by the medieval moats of the former city fortifications, is characterized by an eclectic quarter and half-timbered buildings as well as town houses.
Meiningen was founded as a Franconian royal estate and was first mentioned in 982.
From 1008 it belonged to the Hochstift Würzburg for more than half a millennium and, due to its favorable location, soon developed into the most important city in today's southern Thuringia. It was able to maintain this position from 1583 as the administrative seat of the Henneberg region and from 1680 as the capital and residence of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen until the 20th century.
The city was also known for a profound theater reform under Duke Georg II and a great heyday of the Meininger Hofkapelle under the leadership of well-known conductors such as Hans von Bülow and Max Reger.

Rohrer Mountain

Highlight • Summit

Rohrer Berg is the common name for the mountain between Meiningen and Rohr.
This road runs between the Drachenberg, on the Schanz, the Küchenberg and the Hessenkoppe.
The site of the former Meiningen airfield and the Meiningen animal shelter are located at its height.
Furthermore, some hiking trails run along the height, so that you can start hiking tours from here to some excursion destinations; for example to the Dolmar and the peace oaks.
There is also a freeway entrance at the height, which ensures increased traffic.
The road surface is in good condition.

Before I headed back home after my short vacation, I had to do a farewell run with Buddy. After sub-zero temperatures at the beginning, the sun 🌞 came out pretty quickly and we did another run in the best winter weather.
