Greys Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Carries London Road over the River Frome towhich stood a few hundred feet to the north. Two metal plaques threaten transportation for life for anyone found guilty of wilfully damaging the bridge. Featured in Far From the Madding Crowd (1874) and The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) by Thomas Hardy.
The bridge marks the boundary between town and country. Then, as now, Casterbridge “… had no suburbs—in the ordinary sense. Country and town met at a mathematical line.” Beyond lie the water meadows and corn fields Hardy calls Durnover Moor.

A small path through the meadows to the north side of Grey’s Bridge leads up river 50 yards or so to the pool called Ten Hatches Weir. Here, Michael Henchard intended to drown himself, after finding his own effigy floating in the water.

Sculpture by the Lakes

Highlight • Monument

Best avoided if you are looking for a sandwich or light bite lunch, best to carry on to the Walled Garden 2 miles away at Moreton, lovely freshly prepared sandwiches etc and very friendly helpful staff.
The cafe is highly pretentious and was a complete waste of time serving only four or five main meals ~£12 per meal with no indication of accompaniments or drinks menu.
If you want sandwiches or something light it is pre-made pre-packed from a takeaway pantry and there is nowhere to sit down to eat them.
The bike racks are useless wheelbending hoops , not even bolted down and hence failing my insurance requirements for an ebike to lock to an immovable object.
I am sure the sculptures are stunning unfortunately we were so put off we decided against viewing or returning at a later date.

Rhododendron Mile

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Catch this at the right time of the year and you'll understand why it's called Rhododendron Mile. A rolling road that cuts through Puddletown Forest, you'll fall in love with Southern Dorset's countryside.

St Pancras Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Running alongside the River Piddle, Alton Pancras is a small village with its church dedicated to St. Pancras. Little features remain from the 15th century when the church was built however its organ has an interesting history, having been originally a fairground organ, and thus has a different tone from most church organs.

Cerne Abbas Giant

Highlight • Monument

Ride down Acreman Street for a marvellous view of the Cerne Abbas Giant.

Measuring at 55 metres (180 ft) high, the origin of the figure of a man wielding a club on Trendle Hill is unknown.

The chalk figure is often thought to be ancient, yet there is no evidence for its existence prior to drawings found from the early 1700s.

It is made from a series of narrow, small trenches filled with chalk rubble, and is maintained by the National Trust.
