Monte Toboggan Ride

Highlight • Structure

This is where the most unique sleigh ride into the valley to Funchal starts. The idea for this came about in the 19th century as to how best to transport the products from the fields into the valley to Funchal for sale. So very sturdy wicker baskets were woven and fitted with runners. This meant that fruit and vegetables could be transported quickly and efficiently. Over time, these transport routes became too complicated and so rich Brits discovered this fun for themselves and rode down into the valley in the Tobbogans. Today, the basket sleigh ride is run professionally, and the fun for around 10 minutes costs up to €35 depending on how busy it is. If there are cruise ships in the harbor, there is no point in trying to quickly book a sleigh ride... the queue can easily be up to 2 hours long.

The viewpoint of Terreiro da Luta is located in the municipality of Monte and offers the best conditions to enjoy the beautiful view over the Bay of Funchal.
This viewpoint is located in the municipality of Monte, on the site where a monument to the Blessed Virgin, “Nossa Senhora da Paz”, was erected to honor a promise made by the Madeiran people during the bombing of the city of Funchal in 1917 by German submarines to redeem. In addition to the sculptural work of art, you can enjoy the beautiful view over the Bay of Funchal.

Regional 202 is the main access road to Pico do Areeiro and the trails in the area. Some sections are relatively exposed, which allows for charming views of the region. With luck and clear weather, the view from this point is fascinating.
