The watercourse of the same name flows in the municipality of Ribeira da Janela. It is the largest and most productive river in the interior of the island of Madeira. A beautiful but tough trip if you are 65+. The first 2.5 km involve climbing and the road is sometimes very steep. When descending, there are difficult parts of the route: narrow, cobbled and no handholds. But definitely worth it!

A few shortcut stairs and an extra tunnel, nice walk. Partly in the shade, which was nice.

The path from Porto Moniz over the mountain to Ribeiro da Janela is interesting when it leaves the road. It is varied and relatively easy to walk with the right footwear. It is a bit overgrown in some places. It is impossible to get lost 😉. The way back to Porto Moniz goes along the old roads that were used …

Showing Translation

Great views on the hike. It is a steep 470 meters in altitude, but the paths are easy to manage, provided you are fit and sure-footed.

Showing Translation

Great hike with a great view but the first 2 kilometers were very strenuous. 27% gradient. The way back is not so steep but a bit slippery. So only start if you are in good shape 👍
