In 1903 Bernhard Howaldt, son of the HDW founder, had a hydroelectric power station built where a paper mill used to be. The operation was so successful that in 1908 a second plant was added. For this purpose, the Schwentine was dammed up with a dam to create the Rosensee.

Shortly before the Schusteracht reaches its northernmost point in Raisdorf, it crosses the Rosensee in the Rosenfeld district of the municipality of Rastorf, which was created by the damming of the Schwentine. It is the only dam in Schleswig-Holstein. Hydroelectric power station 2 was built on the dam wall in 1909, which at that time served the engineer Bernhard Howaldt to cover the electricity requirements of his factories in Kiel. Hydroelectric power station 1 from 1904 is a little further down the river. Both power stations have been under monument protection since 1994.

White Bridge over the Rosensee

Highlight • Bridge

Never thought the bridge was over 100 years old!
It was built in 1907, restored in 1987 and listed in 1993 as the oldest concrete arch bridge in Schleswig-Holstein.
I used it for the first time in 1986 🙂

The first bridge was built at this point in 1779. Before there was a ford through the Schwentine (the Rosensee did not exist then, because it was only dammed up in the 20th century).

The bridge is repainted every second year by residents.

The lake was created as a reservoir in 1908 during the construction of the Schwentine hydroelectric power plants by shipyard founder Bernhard Howaldt and is now a fundamental part of the Schwentine Landscape Park. To create the reservoir, Bernhard Howaldt had to purchase land along the Schwentine River as far as the lands of Count Christian zu Rantzau (Rastorf Estate) and Preetz Monastery. The price per hectare at the time was approximately 2,000 marks. Raisdorf was first supplied with electricity in 1904 by the Raisdorf 1 hydroelectric power plant at the Rastorfer Mill. The Raisdorf 2 hydroelectric power plant followed in 1909. The power plants are now listed as historical monuments and are operated and maintained by Kiel's municipal utilities.

Fish Ladder at Rastorf Mill

Highlight • Structure

So that not only the water but also the fish can pass through the Schwentine, especially in the dammed area, a fish ladder was built at the former Rastorfer mill. Swimming from pool to pool, the fish are able to overcome the difference in height that results from the accumulation of water in the individual sections of the Schwentine. The fish ladder at the Rastorfer Mühle was completed in 2012.
Sea trout and salmon can now access the Schwentine's reservoirs from the Kiel Fjord via various fish ladders (fish ladder at the mouth of the Schwentine, via this fish ladder on the old Schwentine river bed, at hydroelectric power station I, the former Rastorfer mill and at hydroelectric power station II above the worth seeing Helix tower fish pass) almost to the spring meadow northeast of the village of Bergfeld (Kasseedorf, near Bungsberg).

This is a nice, beautiful round. The start is a parking lot at the Oppendorfer Mühle. In particular, the eastern side from the Rosensee to the Oppendorfer Mühle is very beautiful

Before my sister's exhibition "NATURE: VIEWS" on Fehmarn began, I went on a short hike with her and Loki 🐕 around part of Lake Rosensee. We also have a lot of nature here along the Schwentine River and Lake Rosensee 🌳😀, of course with different views than on Fehmarn. My brother-in-law accompanied us for a short stretch.

The sun has invited to an autumn hike along the Schwentine and around the dammed Rosensee. In many places there was a lot of leaves and they rustled wonderfully when we "walked through" them. The Obstquelle Schuster has not yet harvested all the apples. We saw many birds on the water and in their hiding places in the shore area. …

Sun and no clouds yet. That motivated me to do a round trip around the house, a small part of the Schusteracht, the old arm of the Schwentine, the Rosensee, and the wildlife park in Schwentinental. There were again many photo opportunities in nature.

A really nice round, unfortunately only very cloudy to look at due to the season. In spring and summer it is definitely a dream here! But then there is probably STILL more going on than on a Saturday in January 🙄 If you also get lost in the Schwentinental Wildlife Park, you are in the middle of people. For days …

I actually just wanted to go to the new nature experience bridge over the Schwentine at the Schwentinental wildlife park for a photo shoot.

The hike ended up being even longer. Along the old arm of the Schwentine over the new bridge 📸, to the cartwheeling peacock in the wildlife park, around the Rosensee, again over the new bridge 📸 …
