Laderholz Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Laderhölzer Chapel was inaugurated on 30.12.1885 after six months of construction. It is a single-nave brick building with tower and apse, in the early Gothic style, but with a flat wooden ceiling. The tower has a height of 16.40 m. It is massively built up to the height of 10.20 m, topped with slate.

In 1543, the first mention of a chapel in Laderholz, the exact year of origin is unknown. The old chapel stood on a hill, about 50 meters south of today's location. It had to be demolished in 1877 because of dilapidation. For a new building, the existing property was out of the question, because near the old chapel were still graves that would have to be opened in a new building. Thus, today's chapel property was bought by the chapel community.

But with this property it has its special meaning. Pastor Simon reports that 40 years before the chapel was built, this property had been the home of an inn, through which most of the former stewards in Laderholz were led to drink and play. In the memory of the loader population, however, another variant is handed down. As a result of a dispute, a man is said to have died in this inn. Pastor Simon goes on to write: "Thus the Lord God has made the place that formerly brought cursed the church into a place of blessing.
