Flörsheimer Schweiz

Highlight • Forest

Between the Flörsheim district of Falkenberg and the Flörsheim lookout tower lies the "Flörsheim Switzerland." Compared to the otherwise flat southern foothills of the Taunus Mountains, this scenically stunning area boasts relatively significant differences in elevation. The Wickerbach stream is the defining feature of this "Switzerland." The floodplain, home to numerous rare animal and plant species, has been a nature reserve since 1998.

There are 191 "Switzerlands" worldwide. At least. Sixty-seven of them are located in Germany alone. This is according to the Swiss National Tourist Office; the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" even claims to have counted 233. This honorary title is bestowed upon regions that are somewhat wilder than their surroundings, evoking a romanticized vision of the real thing. Often, just a few prominent hills with steep slopes and a view are enough to earn this moniker. The Flörsheim Switzerland is certainly one of the flattest of these "Switzerlands." Just think of the Nassau Switzerland region a little further along in the Taunus mountains near Eppstein. And even the Holstein Switzerland region in Schleswig reaches the 160-meter mark.

Eisenbaum Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The iron tree is located in a scenically attractive nature reserve. From the two platforms of the tree, there is a great view over the surrounding landscape. The tree has a solar-powered sound system. Therefore, "the tree is silent at night and speaks during the day" as soon as you step onto the upper platform. You learn details about its construction from the tree. The tree also points out that it is clearly recognizable as an artificial tree – in contrast to genetically modified trees.

Flörsheimer Watchtower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Flörsheimer Warte, a former watchtower, was part of the Kasteler Landwehr in the 15th century, which the Archbishopric of Mainz had established to protect its possessions on the right bank of the Rhine. After secularization (1803), the Landwehr lost its importance, as there was nothing left to defend due to lack of substance.

The Flörsheimer Warte gradually fell into ruin. In 1996, a reconstruction based on historical models was built next to the relics of the medieval defensive tower. From here, there are magnificent panoramic views in all four cardinal directions over the Rheingau and the Taunus to the Frankfurt skyline.

The popular excursion restaurant "Flörsheimer Warte" with a wine garden and weekend winter lounge invites you to enjoy Spundekäs, Handkäs, and Bauernsalat, accompanied by the best drops from the vineyards in Wicker and Hochheim. More information: rheingau.com/infosystem/floersheimer-warte/poi.html.

Historic vineyard in Rüsselsheim. First mention of the Riesling cultivation in 1435. The wine is also sold. Due to the size of the vineyard, there are only a few bottles available.

Finally I was here too. Seen so many times in photos, now live and in color.
And finally, what a coincidence, delicious cheesecake.
During the tour we talked about the Café Auszeit in Diez, which @Manuela 📸 had recommended. There are 12 different types of cheesecake there. The Bootshaus Flörsheim offers at least 8 different types of cheesecake, which of …

A relaxing and beautiful hike around Flörsheim. We started in Bad Weilbach, visiting the spa gardens and the sulfur spring – a refreshing drink is highly recommended 😉👍

From there, we continued along the Panorama Trail to the Flörsheim lookout tower, a stone circle, and then along a trail to the Wiesenmühle mill, which was currently closed.
