Two off-road parking areas very close by, but they do get full up very quickly, even in winter.

Bank Top Iron Kilns

Highlight • Historical Site

The ironstone-rich landscape around Rosedale was totally transformed in Victorian times as demand for iron grew. So valuable was Rosedale Ironstone that 19th-century mine owners made every effort to extract it, even in remote areas.

Bank Top was where all the ironstone came for processing and transport. There would have been a railway, processing works, houses, plus more at this spot in the mid-19th century. Today, the crumbling kilns, chimneys and other ruins here are testament to a bygone industry. You get some breathtaking views at Bank Top, too.

Rosedale East Iron Kilns

Highlight • Monument

Another set of well-preserved kilns on this track, which used to be the Rosedale Railway. These were four terraced calcining (i.e. roasting) kilns, each with four bays. These were built in the 1860s. From here, ironstone was transported by rail to Teesside.

Rosedale East Iron Kilns

Highlight • Historical Site

East Mines are the remains of what used to be old iron kilns. The kilns were used to calcine (i.e. to roast) ironstone to reduce its weight, so it could be transported.

Rosedale Railway Path

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

Of disused railways in Britain, this must be one of the best. Between the 1860s and 1920s, Rosedale was an important ironstone mining location. This track is what remains of the line that went from Battersby Junction across the moors to the large kilns at Bank Top. There are spectacular views from here of the dales down below and along the embankment.

Great walk or run. Lots to see if you like Railways or industrial heritage. Parked at Bank Top and it's a steep climb out of Rosedale at the end, if you go clockwise. Might be best going anti clockwise if you fancy it
