Chalk and clay are important raw materials for cement production. The first chalk pits (from 1862) are simple earthen holes with a diameter of around 12 meters and a depth of up to 15 metres. The chalk is laboriously broken out of the wall by human hands in tiers with poles and pickaxes, thrown up with shovels and transported away with wheelbarrows.

From 1883 steam trains drove into the pit. However, the chalk is still mined by hand and the carts are loaded with shovels.

In 1899 the first steam bucket chain excavator was used. He scrapes off the chalk and can load the lorry train straight away.

After 1900, dredging also replaced manual quarrying in the clay pits in the region.

Klinker Production History in Lägerdorf

Highlight • Historical Site

Edward Fewer and William Aspdin built the first shaft furnace in 1862
Lägerdorf. 150 years ago, clinker production looked like this:

Shavings and logs are placed on the lower cast steel grid in the furnace,
then a layer of coke and then a layer of dry clods
(cement raw material). Coke and clods then alternate in layers until the
filling level of seven meters is reached. Then the access and
Filling openings bricked up and the stove lit.

The fire in the clods lasts 24 hours. A day of cooling off follows. Thereafter
the kiln is emptied and the burnt clinker is sorted. Per week can so
nine tons of clinker are produced.
