Anne Frank Square

Highlight • Monument

The square at the beginning of Prins Bernhardstraat, near Keizerstraat, Waterstraat, Wolvenhoek and De Mortel, is called Anne Frankplein. Named after Annelies Marie Frank, a fifteen-year-old German-Jewish girl who died in 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. During the Second World War she went into hiding with her family in Amsterdam. Due to betrayal, the family was arrested and deported to Germany. She is known for her diary, which has been translated into dozens of languages under the title 'The Secret Annex'. In the square on a tile is a text from her diary: "When I look up to heaven, I somehow feel That this cruelty will end, And that peace will return". The memorial plaque is located near a monument: the Peace Pole. A Peace Pole is a pole, on each side of which is written the phrase 'May peace reign on earth' in a different language. Here in 's-Hertogenbosch it concerns the Dutch, English, French and Japanese languages. In response to the devastation and atrocities of World War II, the Japanese Masahisa Goi erected the first Peace Pole at the end of 1945. He conceived the lyrics out of the desire that no one should harbor revenge and hatred towards other people. There are currently about 250,000 Peace Poles spread all over the world. During the recent redevelopment of the Prins Bernhardstraat and the reconstruction of the Anne Frankplein, the Peace Pole was also replaced. The Bossche Vredespaal -an initiative of Pax Christi- was unveiled on the Anne Frankplein on 26 October 1997.

The Noordbrabants Museum

The Noordbrabants Museum is located in an elegant eighteenth-century government palace in the center of medieval 's-Hertogenbosch, making it ideal for combining with a visit to the Brabant capital. The museum is known for the award-winning exhibition 'Jheronimus Bosch – Visions of a Genius', which ran throughout 2016 and received great reviews such as “A remarkable curatorial feat” (The Wall Street Journal) and “C'est l'exposition de l'année” (Beaux-Arts Magazine). Located under the same roof as the Design Museum Den Bosch, the two museums together form one of the largest cultural attractions in the Netherlands, with more than 5000 square meters of exhibition space.

"The construction of the St.-Jan parking garage on Hekellaan  gave archaeologists the opportunity to research the history of 's-Hertogenbosch at that location. The parking garage is located in an area of the city that shows visible traces of the history of the fortified city of 's-Hertogenbosch.

In 1997, the Building Historical and Archaeological Service conducted a preliminary investigation at the city wall and the Judas Tower along Hekellaan and the Vonk en Vlamterrein. The 14th-century city wall (hidden behind a 19th-century clamp) is still prominent here.

The Judastoren with its thick walls is originally a wall tower that was transformed into a round part in the 16th century. In the 19th century it was converted into a powder magazine. The earliest parts in this tower date from the 14th century. Nowadays the entrance is at the St.-Jan parking garage."

It was really fun to “work” the little ferry ⛴ to the other side of the Dommel using our own muscle power.
A real highlight 😄👍

Then continue along the Dommel to 's-Hertogenbosch, the capital of Noord-Brabant, a city with a lot of history and sights.

Be sure to try it and don't pay attention to calories:
Bossche-Bollen, also sometimes called Chocoladebol, a specialty from 's-Hertogenbosch with a good coffee ☕️.
Simply great 👍👍👍

Cable ferry De Moerasdraak

Highlight • Bridge

Pull ferry The Swamp Dragon. By turning the wheel, the ferry is pulled to the other side on a steel chain. This requires some effort, especially when the wind is strong.

The Bossche Broek is a nature reserve of 202 ha southeast of 's-Hertogenbosch in the valley of the Dommel. What is special is that the nature reserve is close to the center of the city. Various walking and cycling routes are possible in the area with the skyline of Den Bosch in sight.
