Arsenal (Fort Sint-Gertrudis)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Arsenal or Landsmagazijn was built between 1770 and 1778 at the inner harbour, designed by architect Philips Willem Schonck. The stonework of the square-shaped building was made by stonemason Guilliam Carrier. Cast iron cannons were placed on either side of the entrance in the front façade at the harbour as a bollard. The coat of arms of the Province of Holland is placed in the arch field of the front façade.

The rear façade of the building, located behind the Hoofdwacht on the Venestraat, is almost identical to the front façade. Until 1950, the building was located at the inner harbour, which was filled in that year. For years, the building has been a party centre under the name 'Fort Sint-Gertrudis'.

Fortifications of Geertruidenberg

Highlight • Historical Site

The fortified town of Geertruidenberg is originally Dutch. It was the first to receive city rights from the County of Holland in 1213. Real fortifications appear at the beginning of the Eighty Years' War when William of Orange takes the city. He had new walls and three bastions built there. The fortifications were modernized in the 16th and 17th centuries. Fortification builder Menno van Coehoorn turned this 'Key of Holland' into a strategic place in the Zuiderwaterlinie to ward off the French. The city joined North Brabant in 1813 (under Louis Napoleon). (Source Zuiderwaterlinie)

Water pump on the market square

Highlight • Monument

In the course of the seventeenth century, water pumps came into use to pump up shallow groundwater. This groundwater served as a substitute for the use of river or rainwater. Naturally wells, cisterns and river water continued to be used, but in urban areas more and more communal water pumps were installed. The pumps in Geertruidenberg are connected by lead pipes to the nearby medieval "well water wells".
