Sagres Fortress

Highlight • Historical Site

This is a great little fortified headland to visit. More of a fortified wall really that separates the headland from the town. Go through the fort and there is a nice 3-4k walk around the coastal cliffs. Well worth the afternoon.

The large portal through which one gains access to the fortress gives an idea of its size.

Within this building, the sound of the sea and the draft of a grotto below are amplified and turn into a particularly fascinating experience.

In the late afternoon we drove to Cabo de São Vincente. Unfortunately the lighthouse was closed but clothes stands and sausage stands were open. We had expected even more hustle and bustle. In Sagres we then visited the fort and strolled around the town a bit.

Fortaleza de Sagres Fortress is located 2 km from the center of Sagres.

The fortress is located on the 1,000 meter long and 300 meter wide promontory of Ponta de Sagres. It is a national monument.

Visit the old fortress of Henry the Navigator at the southernmost point of Portugal. Right next door is Cabo do Sao Vicente, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe.
Here you can also find the "last bratwurst before America...😉" complete with a certificate.

Actually, we wanted to go to the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, where we have been in 2016 before. We wondered the whole time that we didn't recognize anything at all 🤔. At some point we realized that we were on a peninsula further south 🙈.

Today, in cloudy and very windy weather, we went on a short hike along the cliffs to Sagres Castle. The fortress is impressive, dates back to the 11th century and was probably an important castle complex. It marks the end of the southwesternmost point of Portugal and is a great highlight.

The €3 entrance fee is worth it! Impressive fortress with great views of Sagres, the coast and the Atlantic. It's amazing that the pirates were ever able to conquer this fortress. Very well done multimedia exhibition on Portugal as a seafaring nation and former ruler of the world's oceans. In total, you walk a few kilometers!

Cape Sagres with its fortress ruins is not particularly spectacular. It's the most south-western tip of Portugal and a must-see. There is very little to "city" about it. However, you can see very nicely how the sea divides into the gentle Algarve coast and the rough Atlantic coast, where the surfers hang out. In the middle of the cape there …

The next destination of the day was actually just around the corner. Both destinations were basically within sight.
Fortaleza de Sagres is a Portuguese national monument of great importance.
For a small fee of €3 per person, it is possible to view this large complex. I would definitely recommend it.
I found the snail-shaped building in the middle of which …
