Lohn House

Highlight • Historical Site

(from Wikipedia)
Haus Lohn in Südlohn, not to be confused with the former Lohn Castle in today's Stadtlohn, was rebuilt around 1785 on the site of an older, burned-down structure on the Schlinge.

The building with five axes, surrounded by a moat, is considered the only early classicist noble residence in the Borken district. It is a brick building with a hipped roof covered with tiles. After a fire in 1837, an upper floor was added to the building, so that today it is two-story. The outer walls are whitewashed and the windows have shutters. The entrance door on the front is highlighted by sandstone surrounds, a small staircase and the narrow central projection towering above it. Above the entrance is the coat of arms of the Belgian noble family Looz-Corswarem, who owned Haus Lohn from 1841 to 1856. The entrance to the house is flanked on the right-hand side by outbuildings. The current house is still surrounded by a moat on three sides.

A drawing from the end of the 16th century shows a complex of several larger and smaller buildings that stand on an island in a pond. The gaps between the houses are closed by short walls. The inner courtyard area appears to be additionally protected by a wall towards the entrance. Access is via a drawbridge through a gatehouse.[34]

In 1357, Dietrich von Dornoke or Dornick called Loneken was the first owner of the Lohn house. It was probably a side branch of the noblemen von Lohn. From 1500 onwards, the owners called themselves "von Loen". Lohn house is privately owned

Beeke's Milk Hut

Highlight • Cafe

Ideal for a short stop. The bench offers a place in the sun. The vending machines give hot and cold drinks, and there is also something for the small appetite. Likewise groceries such as potatoes, fresh milk and the like. A great place to take a break.
