This challenging mountain bike loop takes you through the diverse landscapes of the Santa Cruz Mountains, connecting Stevens Creek County Park and Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. You'll navigate varied terrain, from loose rock and redwood needles to tight switchbacks, winding through oak woodlands, chaparral, and stands of Douglas fir. The highlight is the engaging singletrack of the White Oak Trail, known for its twists and turns, which can lead to awesome views from Black Mountain.
Planning your ride requires careful attention: mountain biking is not permitted within Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve itself, though the route starts from there. You'll be riding in the adjacent Stevens Creek County Park and Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. The White Oak Trail is prone to mud and can close during wet weather, so always check trail conditions before heading out. Parking is available at Picchetti Ranch.
This difficult 25.9-mile (41.7 km) route involves a substantial 3236 feet (986 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 3 hours and 58 minutes to complete. It's best suited for experienced riders with good fitness and advanced skills, as some sections in Upper Stevens Creek Park feature steep, rocky, and rooted terrain that may require pushing your bike. The network of trails offers a rewarding experience for those seeking a demanding ride in Santa Clara County.
