When you think of the coasts of the Baltic Sea, today you understand spa architecture to mean primarily the buildings in the immediate vicinity of the beach. Hotels and guest houses with richly decorated balconies and villas with spacious gardens spring to mind. Spa architecture is not very old, as bathing life on the island only began around 200 years ago. At first the style was shaped by princely buildings of classicism, such as the princely bathhouse Goor, built in 1817/18 in Lauterbach near Putbus, but later a mix of different architects' styles became more and more widespread.
