Around 85 AD, the Romans arrived on the middle Neckar. From this time on, the Neckar formed the border between the Roman Empire and free Germania. Several thousand Roman soldiers secured this border in the forts of Köngen, Bad Cannstatt, Benningen, Wahlheim, Heilbronn, Wimpfen and Neckarburgen.
To supply the troops, but also the civilian population, numerous Roman country estates, so-called Villae rusticae, were established on the fertile loess soils of the region.
