    Hiking

The "Snow Cone" is part of the "Spatter Cones" with the unique feature that snow lingers deep in the cone. The very short trail up to the Snow Cone is wheelchair-accessible and is also the trailhead for the longer North Crater Trail.

Explore the unique volcanic landscape of Craters of the Moon National Monument on the Snow Cone – Spatter Cones loop, a moderate 6.8-mile (10.9 km) hike with 499 feet (152 metres) of elevation gain. This route takes you through an otherworldly terrain of black volcanic rocks and cinder beds, leading to fascinating spatter cones and the distinctive Snow Cone, a crater that often holds snow even in summer. You'll get an intimate look at some of the park's smallest volcanoes, offering a truly unique experience.

Access the trail from Stop #5 off the Loop Road, a short distance from the Craters of the Moon National Monument Visitor's Center. While the individual trails are short and easy, this combined loop provides a more extensive exploration, taking approximately 2 hours and 57 minutes. Remember that pets are typically not permitted on park trails due to the sharp lava rocks and high surface temperatures, so plan accordingly.

This loop is one of the more popular trails at Craters of the Moon National Monument, notable for its accessible volcanic features and the geological phenomenon of the spatter cones. It's an excellent choice for those seeking a family-friendly adventure or visitors with limited time who still want to experience the park's iconic lunar-like scenery and unique geological formations up close.
