Offices, apartments and cafés now adorn the banks of the Duisburg Inner Harbour, which was built between 1840 and 1844 as the western part of the Ruhr Canal. Initially, the timber industry settled there, later followed by mills with large granaries, which earned the harbour the nickname "breadbasket of the Ruhr area". As part of the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park, the approximately 89-hectare area was redesigned according to plans by Norman Foster. Today, museums are located in two of the remaining mill granaries.
