Built at the beginning of the 13th century, the complex was damaged during the German Peasants' War and finally destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
The ruin is famous above all for its massive, approximately 60-meter-long and 20-meter-high shield wall from the late Middle Ages, which was designed for artillery use.
