The gate tower was built in 1605 under Hans von Kerpen, together with a corner tower of the castle complex. The year of construction is recognizable on the alliance coat of arms with his wife Anna von Cronberg above the passage. Less known: on the outside, the passage shows ashlar masonry with a round shooting slit. The original residential building is not preserved; at the beginning of the 20th century, the municipality of Illingen acquired the property and had a new residential annex built. In the year 2000, the gate was awarded the Saarland Monument Preservation Prize.
