The Marienberg Fortress is about 100m high above the Main on a mountain tongue. The fortress was the residence of the Würzburg prince-bishops for about 500 years. In the Peasants' War the rebellious peasants tried unsuccessfully to storm the fortress and suffered a bitter defeat
