Prästö has been designated "The Island of the Dead" because six burial sites for five religions were established here. The first was built for the Russian Orthodox on the northwestern side of the island.
When work on the fortress construction began and the population increased, more burial sites were also built. Partly a Jewish and a Muslim one, but also new and larger ones for the Russian Orthodox, Lutherans, and Catholics on the eastern side of the island.
The large walls and the extensive fenced-off areas show that the Russians planned to stay in Bomarsund for a long time.
