The monument commemorates five young communist partisans (Ahmet Haxhia, Naim Gjylbegu, Ndoc Mazi, Ndoc Deda and Hydajet Lezha), who in August 1944 were surrounded and died in battle with the gendarmerie in the village of Vig.

The bronze monument was created by the well-known Albanian sculptor Shabani Hadëri and unveiled in 1982.

Originally, the monument stood in the very center of Shkodra (Democracy Square). After the fall of communism, it caused considerable political controversy – in 2008 it was removed from the center and moved to the martyrs' cemetery. After years of protests from veteran communities, in 2014-2015 it was restored and placed on the roundabout at the northern entrance to Shkodra (towards Koplik), where it is currently located and where this photo was taken.
