The Nidda rises in the Vogelsberg and flows into the Main near Frankfurt after about 90 kilometers. Its middle section was extensively straightened and used as a canal. However, since the 1990s, extensive renaturation measures have been underway. Weirs have been removed, banks flattened, and the river is now allowed to meander again. Numerous animals find their habitat in the water and its magnificent floodplains. The landscape is a breeding, resting, and overwintering area for many bird species. White storks, which were considered almost extinct in the Wetterau in the 1980s, also inhabit the area again today.
