The arched bridge of the Höllentalbahn, which ran between Triptis and Marxgrün, was in use from 1895 to 1945. After that, the railway line leading to Thuringia was discontinued. The Selbitz Viaduct is now a lost place.

The Triptis – Marxgrün railway was used regularly by Adolf Hitler's special train from Berlin to Berchtesgaden. During the day the train was parked bombproof in the Kesselberg tunnel in the Höllental; for safety reasons, the train was only driven at night.
