The aqueduct is a 19th-century stone structure that once carried water from the lakes inland to the city of Ponta Delgada. The most spectacular section is the "Wall of the Nine Windows". It owes its name to the striking arches that open like windows in the wall. These openings are designed so that gusts of wind can pass through without damaging the building's structure.
