The Apoteksskogen forest, through which the Smedgärdsspåret trail runs, is situated on the Stockholmsåsen, a glacial esker landscape, and consists largely of what is known as sand pine forest (sandbarrskog) – a natural habitat that has become rare in Sweden and is worthy of protection.
